Making a feather palm tree table arrangement.

This is perhaps the most popular wedding and party table centre arrangement at the moment.

It is a very simple concept of combining a tall lily vase and ostrich feathers to form an elegant table centre.

Suggestions on how to make up a feather palm tree for your wedding table.

It is important to remember that these are only suggestions and not hard and fast rules.

Vase Type

lily vase

The most common type used are lily vases in clear, white or black. They are available in 20cm, 30cm, 40cm or 60 cm heights. When choosing the correct one for you consider where the table arrangement is going to be placed and how large is the table? Most wedding venues for instance would have round tables with 10 place settings. We would recommend a 60cm tall vase. Bear in mind that any shorter you would not be able to see guests across the table!

Feathers

Ostrich feathers come in many sizes and qualities. We sell 4 main types of ostrich feathers, Spadones, Byock, Premium and Mini Prime. Which you choose depends upon the size you want to create and your budget. Some people like to use a mixture of feather types, for instance using the larger more extravagant premium feathers and then using mini primes to fill in around the bottom.

Spadones

.

spadone

The spadone is the most common ostrich feather used. Up to 25inches long, this comes in a vast range of colours. At Carnmeal we try to stock several 100 of any colour so plan to meet orders very quickly. The most common used for weddings are of course white or ivory. Although many choose use mixed feather colours. Spadones although have a good length are less full than premium feathers. We do buy a top grade of spadone so they will produce a stunning table centre arrangement. We would suggest a minimum of 9 feathers. With a really "thin" spadone which are available you may need more feathers.

Byock

This is a shorter version of a premium wing feathers. Only available in white or cream. Ideal for a 40cm vase . Wider than spadones and do ’hang’ nicely in the vase. Using a smaller vase you can reduce the feather count a little.

Premium Femina Wing Ostrich Featherfemina

Top of the range feather, hence the price, up to 24’ long and very blousy giving a beautiful flow to any arrangement. Use a minimum of 7 feathers upwards.

Mini Prime Ostrich Feathers

.

Only use these for small arrangements using 30cm lily vases. Ideal if the arrangement is not for a table centre but wall facing. Can also be used in conjunction with larger feathers for a varied feather arrangement.

Assembly

Perhaps the last thing that every thinks of. How are they going to be put together? The most common, but in our opinion not the best is to use a bouquet holder in the top of the vase and push the feathers in to form the arrangement. There are several problems with this. It can only be used once, you cannot adjust the feathers and it will eventually disintegrate.

We recommend using Stay Soft. This can be moulded, feathers adjusted, and re-used. Just mould a plug of Stay Soft to fit inside the top of the vase. Push into the top with a section above the rim. Insert the feather quills into position to complete the arrangement.
